![]() ![]() This short time make me believe it only quick formatted the new partition. Windows Server Backup basically deleted both partitions and replaced it with 1 large partition and it formatted 5TB drive in minutes. ![]() ![]() What I want to restore is the partition that should be on the 2nd 1/2 of the drive.Ģ. 1st was backup of the server ~2.5 TB and 2nd is the photo drive. The hard drive originally had 2 partitions on it. I forgot to mention 2 information about the situation that gives me some hope.ġ. Thank you for explaining the details on how file structure are built. I've got multiple TB of photos over the years, and I backup my backups and take one offsite besides. Sorry, I know 1TB of image files can be a lot of files if they were JPG. Had you caught this the moment the partition was deleted, it may have been possible to use partition recovery software to not only restore the partition but the file directory tables on it as well, including all the original names and folders. What the recovery software is finding is whole or partial pieces of the original files, then assigning them temporary names so you can review and rename them.ĭo you believe the back software actually wrote data to the disk? If you've repartitioned the disk, and actually written data to it, I fear that both the file names and at least some of the image data previously stored there is gone except for whatever you can find inside the recovered files. overwriting the data on the disk with a backup), any images stored where the backup was written will be gone. Likewise, if you've destroyed the books themselves in the library (i.e. It is not stored with the file data, but in this separate table that was likely destroyed when the new partition was created. The recovery software can give you a temporary name and the location on the disk where the file starts, but cannot recover the actual file name. If the card catalog is destroyed in such a situation, there is nothing left but to go through the books one by one, and reading them, determine their titles that should be written back into the index. Think of your hard drive surface as a library containing books (files) with no titles, and the directory list as a card catalog containing the book's title and a pointer to the proper location on the shelves. ![]()
